Maximus, CGC, TDI, FDX, FDCH DOB 01/22/2002 120 lbs
Maximus ( MoeMe, or Moe ) has always been ball driven. His first picture from his breeder was him playing with a ball. I explained to his breeder what I wanted him for, and I got it, 10 fold. I wanted a dog I could enjoy Flyball, agilty, and obedience with. And I have always wanted a dog with the right temperament to do pet therapy with. He is the complete package. He is versatile, and will do anything I ask, except stay off the furniture, or out of the trash!
He started his "training" at 9 weeks of age, by practicing recalls, and fetching. He also attended team practice and tournaments to get used to the environment. We began training him over low (7 inches) jumps at about a year, and began training his box turn at 18 months. It took awhile, a dog that size generally can't do a swimmers turn like the smaller dogs. We worked really hard, and overcame alot of misperception, and some prejudice because of his size and look. His temperament and behavior shined through, and on December 12, 2004 he became the first Cane Corso to compete and title in Flyball.
He is well known in this region, and many people were excited to see him run. They were also excited that a large dog, let alone a different breed were out there working. I am hoping that this inspires other people to get involved in Flyball, no matter what kind of dog they have. (There is a misperception that it is primarily Border Collies).
One of my favorite things to see is when those little 'yappy' dogs go nuts over him, and he completely ignores them. He sets a great example.
Maximus will continue to compete in Flyball as long as he is having fun. This year he will be training for agility, Rally O and Obedience. He did great in the intro classes for Agility, and Rally O, and I know he has what it takes for obedience too.
He will also continue his Pet Therapy work, which I love, because it helps people get over their judgements on size and look. Once I tell people he is a therapy dog, you can see any doubt melt away.
I am very proud of him, he has ability, temperament and drive. In his spare time, he shares his life with three Louisiana Catahoulas, and a Jagd terrier.
